Update from the NCDA, May 2025

Welcome to May. What’s new this month?

All 59 NDAP organisations now have access to the advocacy sector portal. This marks a significant milestone in connecting the sector and supporting the important work of advocates across the country. All disability advocates working for an NDAP organisation should now have individual login details to access the portal. If you’re unsure whether you have access, the NCDA team can assist at ncda@dana.org.au.

Recruitment is also underway for a new Data Education and Engagement Officer. This role will continue the work of identifying and reporting on unmet need and demand in the advocacy sector and will help elevate the fantastic systemic advocacy being undertaken by individual organisations. Details on how to apply are available below.

Staff wellbeing has been a strong theme in recent conversations with the sector. Many organisations have shared the challenges of being resource-stretched, and the importance of creating space to debrief—both when facing difficulties and when celebrating wins. From recent sector experience, it’s clear that while funding, technology, and systems are vital, the most valuable resource remains the passionate, dedicated advocates who show up daily for people facing tough situations.

The NCDA’s recent Mental Health and Wellbeing course highlighted the value of embedding debriefing into daily practice. Regular check-ins—formal or informal—can make a real difference in supporting mental wellbeing and building a strong workplace culture.

To keep this important conversation going, a new discussion has been started in the portal community: “How do you embed debriefing into your everyday life?” Advocates are encouraged to share their practices and ideas.

A series of events are also planned for this month, providing further opportunities to connect, learn, and collaborate. For those unable to attend, the NCDA team remains available to discuss how best to support organisations and advocates across the network.
